This 17th-century tower fortress was established in 1641 as a component of the defense strategy devised by Christian IV. While its origins date back to the mid-17th century, records indicate significant construction occurred in 1672. For two centuries, the site maintained a position of strategic importance, holding a historical status comparable to the Akershus and Bergenhus fortresses.
The structure is recognized as a well-preserved example of early modern military architecture and is designated as a Cultural Heritage Site. It was originally built for defense purposes and remains a significant historical landmark.
The fortress is currently open to the public as a tourist attraction. It also serves as a functional venue for various cultural events and festivities.
