The museum serves as a research and teaching facility, supporting studies in art, anthropology, archaeology, and conservation. It houses nearly 50,000 ethnographic objects and over 535,000 archaeological items. The collections primarily focus on First Nations art from the Pacific Northwest, alongside ethnographic artifacts from across the globe.

The facility is housed in a modern brutalist concrete building designed by architects Arthur Erickson and Nick Milkovich. Key architectural spaces include the Great Hall and the Multiversity Galleries. Notable works on display include the monumental cedar sculpture Raven and the First Men by Haida artist Bill Reid.

Established in 1947, the institution features large-scale sculptures, totem poles, and rotating contemporary art displays. Extensive research archives and galleries document the history of the First Nations of British Columbia. The museum is open to the public.
