The 30-meter-tall monument commemorates the 18th-century French Geodesic Mission, which determined the shape of the earth and the position of the equator. Constructed in 1982, the central obelisk is topped with a globe and marks the latitude 0°0’0″. A platform at the top of the structure provides 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.
The complex is designed in the style of a colonial village and functions as a cultural center. It houses an Ethnographic Museum, a planetarium, and the Intiñan Solar Museum, where exhibitions focus on indigenous culture and the history of the scientific expedition. The site is recognized as a National Monument and features various artworks and cultural displays.
The grounds include colonial-style architecture, restaurants, and shops. A line representing the equator runs through the complex, marking the division between hemispheres. The site is open to the public and serves as a tribute to the scientific history of the region.
