Basilica of St. Minias on the Mountain

Local nameChiesa di San Salvatore a Monte
LocationFlorence, Italy

Visit one of the oldest churches in Florence located at the highest point in the city. It's dedicated to Saint Minias, the first Christian martyr of Florence. The legend says that he refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods and was denounced as a Christian. After he was executed, he picked up his head and carried it back to his hermitage on Monte di Firenze.

Built in the 11th century in the Romanesque style, the church boasts a marble facade and exquisite mosaics and frescoes in the cupola as well as on the walls. The complex contains an Olivetan monastery and it is surrounded by defensive walls raised in the 16th century.
