The museum is housed within the 17th-century architectural complex of the Congregation of the Filippini Fathers at Olivella. Established in 1814, it is the oldest museum in Sicily and was relocated to its current site in 1866 following the suppression of religious orders. It is named after Antonino Salinas, a renowned archaeologist and former director who served as a significant benefactor to the institution.
The 8,000-square-meter facility contains one of the region's richest archaeological collections, featuring artifacts from the Phoenician, Punic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Egyptian, and Etruscan civilizations. Notable holdings include the Casuccini Etruscan Collection and an extensive range of Punic and Ancient Greek art. The exhibits document various stages of civilization, covering a timeline from prehistory through to the Middle Ages.
The institution showcases artifacts unearthed during the work of Antonino Salinas alongside significant 18th and 19th-century collections. The site is open to the public and is wheelchair accessible.
