The market has served as a meeting place for merchants and fishermen since the 1200s. It consists of an outdoor marketplace and a permanent indoor facility known as Mathallen. A new year-round facility is scheduled to open in 2027.
Stalls offer a variety of fresh seafood, including fish and shellfish. In addition to marine products, the market features fruit, vegetables, flowers, and souvenirs. Fast food options and farmers' markets are also regularly hosted at the square.
The indoor Mathallen section houses permanent shops and restaurants. The site remains a primary hub for local trade and commerce within the harbor area.
