This medieval citadel served as the royal seat for the Kingdom of Bosnia and remained a significant stronghold until 1527. Founded in the 13th or 14th century, the site contains archaeological layers dating back to the Bronze and Roman ages. It reached its peak development as a royal residence during the 15th century and is a designated National Monument.
The architecture features Late Gothic and Early Renaissance styles, alongside vernacular elements. The defensive complex consists of stone ramparts, bastions, and watchtowers situated on a karst hill. These structures overlook the Pliva waterfall and the surrounding landscape.
The site is currently proposed for inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress is accessible for exploration, featuring preserved historical architectural elements and expansive views from its elevated position.
