The museum is housed in the Parliamentary building, which served as a base for 600 soldiers of the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Officially opened on December 13, 2017, by President Paul Kagame, the institution commemorates the military campaign and strategic efforts required to stop the genocide.
Exhibitions detail the history of the liberation struggle and the specific rescue operations conducted by the RPA. The displays provide insight into the country's progress regarding unity and reconciliation following the conflict. Both internal galleries and external sections of the complex are used to document these historical events.
The site functions as a national memorial and a center for reflection on Rwanda's history. Facilities include wheelchair accessibility and Wi-Fi connectivity.
