As the world's largest monastic library, this site is part of a Benedictine monastery founded in 1074. The library hall was completed in 1776 and is considered a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture. Its interior features seven domes decorated with frescoes by the artist Bartolomeo Altomonte, reflecting the design principles of the Enlightenment.
The library collection consists of approximately 200,000 volumes, with about 70,000 books located in the main hall. These holdings include a significant number of medieval manuscripts and incunabula. The space serves as both an aesthetic focal point and a significant storehouse of knowledge.
The library is open to the public and functions as a spiritual, cultural, and educational center. The complex includes a museum and hosts various exhibitions and cultural events.
