Constructed in 1638, this historic fortress is the second oldest and largest dzong of its kind. It historically served as the seat of government and the national capital. Today, it remains a vital administrative center and a significant site for the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The complex also serves as the official winter residence for the central monastic body.
The structure is located at the scenic confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The architecture features intricate painted woodwork and gold-leaf ceilings.
