The museum is housed in a historic building dating from 1903, which survived the 1940 bombing. Established in 1888, the institution manages a consortium of museum units across the region and is open to the public. A primary highlight is the Sølvskatten fra Bratten (Bratten Silver Treasure), which is the largest Viking Age silver treasure found in Northern Norway.
Exhibitions cover a wide range of topics, including Sami culture, the Lofoten fisheries, and the history of traditional jekt trade vessels showcased at the Jektefartsmuseet, which opened in 2019. The collections span 10,000 years of heritage, ranging from mountain life to maritime history. The institution also maintains an extensive archive of historical photographs and objects documenting regional development.
