This site features a multi-layered history spanning 500 years. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, it functioned as a prison, a hospital, and a military base. It serves as a global symbol of the triumph of the human spirit and democracy over the injustice of the apartheid system.
The facility is recognized for holding numerous political prisoners during the struggle for liberation. Nelson Mandela, a Nobel Laureate and former President, was imprisoned here for 18 of the 27 years he served. Other prominent anti-apartheid activists and former presidents, such as Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma, were also held at this location.
Now operating as a museum, the site is open to the public and includes preserved historical landmarks like the former prison buildings and Nelson Mandela's cell. Tours are frequently conducted by former political prisoners, who provide accounts of the conditions and experiences of those incarcerated there.
