The museum is a municipal institution established in 1861 and is housed in the historic Ostindiska huset (East India House). It chronicles local and regional cultural history, spanning a timeline of 12,000 years from the Viking Age through to contemporary times.
Permanent exhibitions feature extensive collections of artifacts and photographs. Notable displays include the Swedish East India Company and unique iconic objects such as a preserved Viking ship and the world's oldest Volvo.
