The park centers around a large spring that discharges approximately 102 million US gallons of water daily into the St. Johns River. The water remains at a constant temperature of 73 °F, providing a vital winter habitat for Florida manatees. Manatee watching is most prominent during the colder months when the animals seek refuge in the warmer spring water.
Recreational facilities support activities such as canoeing, scuba diving, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. A network of trails is available for hiking and wildlife viewing. Camping facilities are also located within the grounds.
Historical interest is found at the Thursby plantation house, which is situated on the property. The park is open to the public for outdoor recreation and nature study.
