Founded in the first half of the 15th century, this cemetery is, along with the Old-New Synagogue, the most important Jewish historical monument in Prague and the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. Many famous residents of Prague are buried here, including Rabbi Judah Löw ben Betzalel whose name is connected to the legend of Golem.
There are approximately 12 000 tombstones, the oldest one dating back to 1439. Even though the oldest gravestones are quite plain, the later ones are usually beautifully decorated, see for instance Hendl Bassevi's tomb, which is said to be the most representative one.
Closed on Saturdays and during Jewish holidays.
The Old Jewish Cemetery is a part of the Jewish Museum.
