Inaugurated in 1992, this institution originated from the efforts of artists during the revolutionary struggle and later expanded with contributions from college students. It functions as a central site for the research, documentation, and presentation of Eritrean history and heritage.
The museum houses significant archaeological findings from ancient sites such as Adulis, Qohaito, and ancient Ona sites. The collections cover a broad chronological range, including paleontology, prehistory, and archaeology. Dedicated exhibits also document the contemporary history of the nation's struggle for independence.
Ethnographic displays showcase the cultural heritage of the country's nine ethnic groups. Additional sections are dedicated to natural history and ethnology, providing a comprehensive overview of the region's diverse cultural and biological background.
