Opened in 1988, this museum is housed in a 19th-century complex of former whaling boat warehouses, barracks, and a blacksmith's forge. It is the only museum of its kind in the country dedicated to the history of whaling, an industry that was prominent from the 19th century until the 1980s. The site is recognized as a Cultural Heritage Site and features five exhibition nuclei that interpret various aspects of whaling activities and the daily lives of those involved in the trade.
The collection includes specialized tools, equipment, and a significant display of scrimshaw art crafted from whale bones and teeth. In addition to its historical exhibits, the facility contains a specialized library and an auditorium. The museum also serves as a venue for discussions on ocean protection, the blue economy, and maritime innovation.
