Originally constructed in 1890 for celestial observation, the building functioned as a meteorological station for a period before its 2004 reopening by Espaço Ciência. The facility now houses didactic exhibitions and facilitates guided observations using telescopes.
The Cruzeiro is a prominent restored monument located within the historic site. Its preservation was ensured through a restoration project funded by the local government and former students. The elevated position of the square provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
