Originally a Phoenician-Carthaginian settlement, this historic castle was rebuilt by Roger II in 1130 as a royal residence and seat of government. It served as the seat of the Kings of Sicily and the imperial residence for Frederick II and Conrad IV. As the oldest royal residence in Europe, the site has transitioned through Phoenician, Arab, and Norman periods of history.
The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unique Arab-Norman-Byzantine architecture, which combines Byzantine, Islamic, and Romanesque elements. A primary feature is the Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel), which exemplifies this fusion of cultural styles. The building's historical significance as a political center continues today, as it serves as the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly and the historical Sicilian Parliament.
Operating as both a palazzo museum and a private museum, the complex is open to the public. The structure covers an area of approximately 1,000 square meters and remains a symbol of the political power and culture of the Norman kingdom.
