Originally established in 1964 and formerly known as Kikar Malchei Jisra'el, this central square is a primary venue for large-scale public gatherings. It is historically significant as the site of the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Following this event, the square was renamed in his honor and became a central location for national commemoration.
The square is home to the Holocaust and Resurrection memorial, a notable sculpture created by artist Igael Tumarkin. It also serves as the setting for the annual Hebrew Book Fair and numerous political rallies, parades, and civic celebrations. The open space is bordered by the city hall, making it a focal point for administrative and public life.
As a significant landmark, the area is frequently used for mass assemblies and remains an important site for understanding local history and modern political expression.
