The tomb is the final resting place of Johann Gregor Mendel, the Augustinian friar and abbot recognized as the father of genetics. This individual grave, designated as Group 2, grave 81, commemorates the scientist whose experiments with pea plants founded his field of study.
The memorial serves as a site of pilgrimage for scientists and those interested in the history of science. It was recently the focus of a research project in which Mendel's remains were exhumed for DNA analysis.
