Established in 1930 by Max Adler (a local businessman), this facility holds the distinction of being the first planetarium in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. The building, designed by architect Ernest Grunsfeld, Jr., serves as a municipal public museum dedicated to astronomy and astrophysics. It operates as a research-active institution and includes the Doane Observatory.
The museum features multiple immersive theaters, including the Grainger Sky Theater and the Space Theater, which utilize both dome and flat-screen technology for live presentations and educational films. These theaters provide 360-degree content focused on space exploration and celestial phenomena.
