Originally built in the 13th century, the site was known as Motte Bauçay and served as a stronghold for the Bauçay family. It survived conflicts during the Hundred Years' War and experienced devastation during the French Revolution. In the mid-19th century, the structure underwent a significant reconstruction, transforming it into a romantic Gothic Revival architectural folly.
A catastrophic fire in 1932 destroyed most of the buildings, leaving the castle in a ruined state. Over the following decades of neglect, vegetation integrated with the stone structures, creating a unique aesthetic where nature and architecture coexist. The site gained international recognition in 2017 when it was collectively purchased by thousands of individuals from 115 countries through a crowdfunding campaign, establishing a unique model for heritage preservation.
The castle is open to the public, providing access to the ruins and a glimpse into ongoing restoration efforts. The site is characterized by its fairy-tale appearance, blending medieval foundations with 19th-century stylistic additions and natural growth.
