This historic city gate was constructed between 1493 and 1496 to commemorate a military victory by King Charles VIII. Originally serving as both a defensive structure and a triumphal arch, it functioned as a principal royal entrance to the city from the port. The monument has been listed as a national historical monument since May 28, 1883.
Standing thirty-five metres tall, the structure was once an integral part of the city walls. The architecture represents a transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles. The building features specific details related to its 15th-century origins, reflecting its dual purpose as a fortification and a ceremonial monument.
The interior is open to the public for visits and houses an exhibition dedicated to stone masonry and the history of the gate's construction. From the upper levels, a panoramic view of the Pont de Pierre is visible.
