Founded in the 13th century, this Gothic Roman Catholic complex includes a church and a monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. The building was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1920. Its interior is most notable for the polychromes and stained glass windows designed by the artist Stanisław Wyspiański.
The basilica serves as the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows and contains a certified replica of the Shroud of Turin. Within the complex are historic cloisters and a collection of early printed books. It is also the burial place of the Blessed Aniela Salawa.
The site remains an active center for pastoral care, cultural events, and scientific gatherings. The monastery and church comprise one of the oldest Gothic structures, with a history dating back to 1269.
