The Historic Village of Shirakawa-gō is located in the beautiful valley, surrounded by mountains known for heavy snowfall. The architecture of the traditional houses of the village reflect that in their roofs, which are quite steep to allow the snow to easily slide down. This particular design of the roofs is also called "prayer-hands construction".
