Kolmanskop originated in 1908 as a wealthy diamond mining settlement during a period of colonial expansion. The town flourished as a center of diamond-fueled wealth before its decline and eventual abandonment in 1956. Since its desertion, the site has been gradually reclaimed by shifting sands, which now partially fill many of the interior spaces.
The settlement is characterized by its Edwardian-style and Germanic architecture. These structures include remnants of a once-thriving colonial town, now in various states of decay. The site is accessible to the public and is noted for its haunting atmosphere and the preservation of its original structures, which include a variety of former residential and public buildings.
The town remains a notable example of a ghost town, preserved by the arid climate and the ongoing encroachment of the surrounding desert environment.
