Designed as an artificial ruin in the Gothic Revival style, this structure was built between 1801 and 1810. Prince Jan of Liechtenstein commissioned the project, which was designed by the architect Joseph Hardtmuth. The building functioned as a hunting lodge and a gamekeeper's house, providing a setting for noble feasts and social gatherings.
The architecture is characterized by its historicist design, intended to mimic a medieval castle in a state of decay. Due to the unstable terrain of the surrounding floodplain forest, the structure was built on a specialized foundation consisting of wooden beams. It is recognized as a significant architectural landmark within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape.
The site is situated along various parkland trails and is a destination for hiking and sightseeing. It remains a notable example of a romantic folly within the region's historic parklands.
