Constructed in 1638, this historic fortress is the second oldest and largest dzong of its kind. It historically served as the seat of government and the national capital. Today, it remains a vital administrative center and a significant site for the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The complex also serves as the official winter residence for the central monastic body.

The structure is located at the scenic confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The architecture features intricate painted woodwork and gold-leaf ceilings. Inside the monastery, sacred relics are preserved within the religious quarters. The site is noted for its aesthetic beauty and is often described as the most beautiful fortress in the area.

The dzong has played a central role in national history as the venue for royal coronations and weddings. It functions as both a place of worship and a working administrative building. The complex is open for visitation, showcasing its historical and religious significance.
