Dating to the early Bronze Age (circa 1800 BCE), this megalithic observatory is situated 1,013 meters above sea level on the volcanic peak of Tatichev Kamen. Discovered in 2001, the site is recognized by NASA as one of the world's oldest astronomical observatories and holds status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site consists of a complex of stone markers carved into andesite rocks. These formations were used to track the movements of the Sun and Moon, including the solstices, equinoxes, and the 19-year Metonic lunar cycle. These observations served both scientific and ritualistic functions for the ancient community, aiding in agricultural planning and ceremonial activities.
As a significant prehistoric sacred site, the observatory demonstrates advanced astronomical knowledge from the 19th century BC. The natural stone markers provided a precise method for monitoring celestial patterns from its elevated position on the mountain mountain.
