Founded in the mid-8th century, this former Benedictine monastery was the most significant religious community in the region until 1803. Known officially as St. Quirinus Abbey, the complex was later converted into Schloss Tegernsee and currently serves as a summer residence for the Dukes in Bavaria, members of the Wittelsbach dynasty. The site encompasses a variety of institutions, including a grammar school, a restaurant, and the Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee, a brewery with over 1,000 years of tradition.
The former abbey church, now a Catholic parish church, is a three-aisled pillar basilica. Its architectural history spans several eras, featuring an 11th-century crypt and west double-tower facade, a 15th-century Gothic nave, and extensive Baroque renovations beginning in 1678. The interior also houses the family crypt of the Wittelsbach family.
The complex includes the Bräustüberl, a popular inn that developed from the brewery's original taproom. Additionally, the Schlosswirtschaft Tegernsee is located within the historic malt cellars. The brewery continues to produce traditional Bavarian beers using methods passed down through centuries.
