The cathedral was originally constructed as a Jesuit church between 1613 and 1621 by the architect Jean du Blocq. The building showcases a transition of architectural styles, combining late Gothic structures with Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic elements. Known as the Lady Comforter of the Afflicted church in the late 18th century and later consecrated as Saint Mary's, it was dedicated as a cathedral in 1870. Significant structural expansions were carried out in the mid-20th century, specifically between 1935 and 1938.
The interior houses the statue of the Consoler of the Afflicted, the protectress of the city, which establishes the site as a significant Marian shrine. Artistic features throughout the building include sculpted alabaster, intricate stained glass, and decorative bronze gates. The ornamentation includes both historical sculptures and modern artistic additions. The exterior is distinguished by its three spires, which are prominent architectural features of the structure.
A crypt located beneath the cathedral serves as the burial site for members of the Grand Ducal family and various bishops. Among the notable figures interred here is John the Blind. The cathedral is open to the public.
