The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is Germany's largest natural history museum and functions as an integrated research institute within the Leibniz Association. Established in 1810 and officially opened in 1889, the institution transitioned from being part of Humboldt University to an independent public law foundation. It serves as a bridge between science and society, focusing on the collection, research, and communication of biodiversity and evolution.

The facility houses a collection of more than 30 million objects spanning the fields of zoology, paleontology, geology, and mineralogy. The mineralogical collections date back to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1700. Significant scientific highlights include the Berlin specimen of Archaeopteryx lithographica, recognized as the earliest known bird, and a towering Giraffatitan skeleton, which stands as the largest mounted dinosaur skeleton in the world.

Current exhibitions feature a diverse range of specimens, including a specialized wet collection and extensive bird collections. The institution is currently undergoing a significant redevelopment project known as Museum Evolution to modernize its facilities as a 21st-century hub for research and public engagement. In addition to its role as a museum, it operates as a university museum and a global center for paleontological and zoological research.
