Tsarevets served as the primary fortress and strongest bulwark of the Second Bulgarian Empire between 1185 and 1393. Situated on a rocky hill, the site functioned as the empire's capital and is designated as a National Monument. The complex contains the remains of the royal palace and the patriarchal palace, reflecting its former status as the political and religious center of the state.
The site features extensive restored fortifications, including the Baldwin Tower. At the highest point of the hill stands the Patriarchal Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord. The grounds consist of various historical ruins and archaeological remains that illustrate medieval defensive architecture.
The fortress is open to the public and is listed among the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. A notable feature is the "Sound and Light" audiovisual show, which uses music and multicolored lights to recount historical events.
