Symbolic Rails

This site marks the former Invalidenstrasse border crossing, which operated from August 1961 until the night of November 9, 1989. Reserved exclusively for West Berliners, it was the final inner-city crossing point to open during the fall of the Berlin Wall. Before the city was divided, tram lines 1, 11, 46, and 70 ran along this route. After the border was sealed in 1961, sections of these rails remained embedded in the road surface for decades as a literal trace of the severed transit connection. These physical tracks were eventually removed during roadworks in the autumn of 2013.

The location remains a significant memorial to the Cold War division of Berlin. A plaque reading Grenzübergang 1961–1989 Invalidenstrasse was installed on the Sandkrugbrücke bridge railing in 1993–94 and is still visible today. The site was also the scene of a dramatic escape attempt on May 12, 1963, when a group of approximately twelve East Berliners tried to break through the crossing in a reinforced vehicle. East German border guards opened fire, stopping the vehicle just before it reached the Western side, resulting in injuries and arrests.
