This Late Baroque and neoclassical religious building serves as an episcopal church and the seat of a diocese. Originally founded as a collegiate church in 1047, it was elevated to cathedral status in 1559 and completely rebuilt between 1751 and 1767. Designed by architect Gaetano Matteo Pisoni, the structure is the only cathedral in the country featuring an academic Late Baroque style with an Italianate influence. It was officially consecrated in 1772 and is listed as a Major Heritage Site of Wallonia.
The interior contains notable examples of Rococo and classical architecture alongside significant historical artworks. A casket containing the heart of Don Juan of Austria, the 16th-century military leader and Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, is preserved within the building. The cathedral also houses various sculptures and paintings from different periods of the region's history.
The building provides access to a museum showcasing a collection of sacred heritage. The exhibits include jewellery from the 16th to 18th centuries, medieval glass, fabrics, and manuscripts. Artifacts sourced from ancient abbeys and local parishes, such as sculptures and paintings, are also on display.
