These ruins represent the only visible monument from ancient Burdigala. Construction dates are debated, with estimates ranging from the late 1st century to the reign of the Severan dynasty (193–235 AD). Originally built to seat between 17,000 and 22,000 people, the structure served as a major venue for public spectacles in Roman Gaul.
Following its peak, the site was used as a stone quarry and a landfill before being declared a historical monument in 1840. Today, the visible remains include an entrance gate, several arches, and sections of the original walls. While much of the site is now covered by modern buildings, its elliptical shape remains discernible within the local urban layout.
