Discovered in 1924 by archaeologist Jean Maury, this cave has been open to the public since 1947. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 as part of the Prehistoric sites and decorated caves of the Vézère Valley. While there is no known evidence of prehistoric settlement within the cave itself, it remains a site of immense geological interest.
The interior features an extraordinary density of mineral formations, often described as a mineral forest. It is geologically significant for containing every known form of calcite crystallization, including stalactites, stalagmites, and rare calcite triangles. These diverse and intricate speleothems are the primary focus of the site.
