Established in 1779 and officially opened in 1795, this 10-hectare botanical garden serves as a research and teaching facility for the University of Palermo. It houses a vast collection of at least 12,000 plant species and played a significant historical role in introducing tropical flora to the Mediterranean region. The grounds include a seed bank dedicated to preserving Mediterranean flora and an herbarium containing approximately 600,000 exsiccata specimens.
The site is characterized by its neoclassical architecture, featuring prominent structures such as the Gymnasium, Tepidarium, and Calidarium. The layout is organized into distinct scientific and ecological zones, including a Linnean section, greenhouses, and bioecological zones. These facilities support ongoing botanical study and the conservation of diverse plant life.
The garden is open to the public and functions as both a scientific institution and a site for public enjoyment. Its historical buildings and diverse plant collections offer insight into centuries of botanical science and architectural history.
