This medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church and museum consists of three distinct buildings constructed in the 10th, 13th, and 19th centuries. The earliest section dates back to 980. The site functions as a branch of the National Historical Museum and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The interior is internationally renowned for its remarkably preserved frescoes, primarily those dating to 1258 and 1259. These mural paintings are considered a masterpiece of medieval Eastern European art, showcasing significant achievements in Bulgarian culture. Notable depictions include portraits of the 13th-century noble sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava.
The architectural ensemble combines elements from different eras, with the 13th-century section representing a peak in medieval Bulgarian architecture. The complex houses one of the most significant collections of medieval art in the region.
