This Eastern Orthodox metropolitan cathedral serves as the seat of the local metropolitan and dates back to the 10th century. The current building, designed by architect Ivan Vasilyov, was officially opened in 1867 and reflects Byzantine Revival architecture. The structure has undergone multiple reconstructions over the centuries following various periods of destruction.
The interior features a gilded iconostasis and serves as the burial site for the Bulgarian Patriarch Neophyte. A significant historical and religious feature is the presence of the relics of the Serbian king Stefan Uroš II Milutin.
As an active place of worship, the cathedral remains a central site for the Orthodox community. It offers regular religious services and provides information regarding Christian traditions and sacraments.
