Built by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II, this Shinmei shrine was envisioned as the greatest Shinto shrine in Asia, second only to the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo. It was intended to serve as a significant religious landmark in Southeast Asia during the occupation.

To prevent desecration, the structure was destroyed by Japanese forces shortly before their surrender and the subsequent British re-occupation. The site was designated a historic site in 2002, although the remains have been left in their post-war state without development.

The ruins consist of remaining support structures, broken pieces, and debris. While the site is located within a nature reserve, it remains inaccessible to the public.
