This mountain reaches an elevation of 5,421 meters and was historically home to the world's highest lift-served ski area. The glacier that supported the resort, estimated to be 18,000 years old, covered 0.22 km² in 1940 but was reduced to 0.01 km² by 2007 and vanished completely by 2009. This disappearance is attributed to climate change and the warm phase of El Niño.
The site is a center for high-altitude research and hosts the Chacaltaya Astrophysical Observatory. This facility conducts scientific studies on cosmic rays and atmospheric variables. Multiple research stations are positioned on the mountain to take advantage of the high elevation.
Access is available by car up to an altitude of 5,200 meters. From there, a trail leads to the summit, which is a destination for amateur mountaineers. The peak provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Lake Titicaca.
