Originally built in the mid-5th century BC in the ancient city of Akragas, this Doric temple is also referred to as Temple I. It was destroyed by the Carthaginians in 406 BC and later suffered damage from earthquakes and fires.
The current ruins consist of four columns that were partially reconstructed in the early 19th century. This reconstruction is noted for its historical inaccuracy, as it combined architectural elements from various different periods and structures. Despite these inconsistencies, the columns have become a prominent symbol of the area's archaeological heritage.
The temple is part of a larger complex of Greek ruins that highlight the region's past grandeur and cultural peak. These archaeological remains are open to the public and offer a direct look into the ancient history of the Mediterranean.
