This UNESCO World Heritage Site represents a complete example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South Asia. Originally established by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the fortifications were significantly expanded and developed by the Dutch during the 18th century. This historic site occupies a rocky promontory and showcases a distinct fusion of European architectural styles adapted to South Asian cultural traditions.
The layout consists of a well-preserved network of narrow alleys lined with colonial-style architecture. The massive fort walls and ramparts provide views of the coastline. Many of the original buildings remain intact, displaying the characteristic facades and structural designs of the colonial era.
Within the fortified area, various historic structures house museums, boutique shops, and cafes. The interior of the fort maintains a slow-paced atmosphere and is open to the public.
