Universally known locally as Plaza Grande, this principal square is the heart of the city's UNESCO-listed historic center and serves as the symbolic center of national executive power. It functioned as the axis for urban development during the colonial era and remains a primary social meeting space. The square also acts as a central reference point for the city's altitude.
The central feature of the plaza is the Monument to Independence, which honors the heroes of August 10, 1809. This date marks the first cry of independence by the Royal Audience of Quito from the Spanish monarchy. The square is framed by significant historical and administrative buildings, including the Carondelet Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, and the municipal building.
The square is bordered by Calle Venezuela, Calle Chile, Calle Gabriel García Moreno, and a pedestrian segment of Calle Eugenio Espejo. Other notable structures facing the plaza include the Plaza Grande Hotel and the Municipal Palace. The area is open to the public.
