This 13th-century castle ruin served as a border fortress guarding the western frontier of the Kingdom of Hungary. It is historically significant as the residence, prison, and place of death of Elizabeth Báthory, a noblewoman known as the "Čachtice Lady." The estate was a wedding gift from the Nádasdy family to Elizabeth and Ferenc Nádasdy in 1575. Throughout its history, the site belonged to figures such as Kazimir of the Hont-Pázmány gens, Matthew Csák, and the Stibor family.

The structure was originally a Romanesque castle featuring a horseshoe-shaped residence tower. It underwent Gothic expansions during the 15th and 16th centuries, followed by a Renaissance renovation in the 17th century. Between 2012 and 2014, the site underwent extensive reconstruction to preserve its remaining structural elements. The ruins have also been featured in films such as Dragonheart.

The site is a National Cultural Monument situated on a limestone-dolomite hill. The surrounding area is designated as a national nature reserve due to the presence of rare plants. Guided tours and cultural events are organized at the site, providing insights into medieval history and life.
