Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner for the 1888 World's Fair, the building is a prime example of Catalan modernism featuring distinctive brick and ironwork complemented by decorative ceramics and stained glass. Initially serving as a café-restaurant, it later functioned as a museum and cultural venue. Located within the Parc de la Ciutadella, the structure has also been used as a research center.

The architecture reflects eclectic influences within the modernisme style, emphasizing ornamental details and innovative construction techniques of the late 19th century. Although historically a public museum, the building is currently closed for renovations. Its significance lies in both its architectural uniqueness and its role in Barcelona's cultural and historical heritage.
