The institution was established in 1933, though the troupe performed at other venues until the current building was completed in 1939. Designed by architect Joseph Langbard, the structure is a notable example of Soviet constructivism. A major renovation of the facility was completed in 2009.
As the only opera and ballet theatre in the country, the venue maintains a repertoire of more than 80 productions. It hosts a wide variety of opera and ballet performances, concerts, and international festivals. Performances are conducted in Belarusian, Russian, and their original languages.
The theatre is home to a world-class ballet company, a symphony orchestra, and a choir. It is recognized as a significant cultural heritage site and a major center for performing arts. The venue is open to the public for scheduled performances.
