The site originated as a 10th-century wooden fort and evolved into a stone castle in the 13th century. Over the centuries, it underwent multiple reconstructions, transforming from a Gothic stronghold into a Renaissance chateau, and later acquiring Baroque and Neoclassical features. A defining architectural element is the Dlouhá jízda, a unique, long walled access road leading to the main complex that was recently reconstructed.
The property was historically held by several noble families, including the Vartenberks, the Lords of Bünau, and the Thun-Hohensteins. Notable historical figures stayed at the castle, such as the composer Frédéric Chopin and the Austrian Emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Following its aristocratic era, the complex served as military barracks for much of the 20th century until 1991.
The castle is open to the public and features several sightseeing tours through its representative lounges and historical grounds. It serves as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions. The grounds also include an extensive park and a famous Rose Garden situated on a rocky ridge above the confluence of two rivers.
